Subject: RE: BELOW(30) MAY 17, 2014

The letter reproduced below is as hilarious as it is hysterical. It was not austerity that created the problems in Greece; it was long term spendthrift governance. Greece fell into deficits trying to finance gold plated civil service union contracts that paid exorbitant wages for short work weeks and impossibly generous benefits including months, not weeks, of vacation. When Greece faced bankruptcy and begged for loans to continue as a sovereign nation, the loans were made with the provision that Greece embark on austerity budgets to curtail spending the nation could not afford; the gravy train ground to a halt.

Street riots were prompted by angry workers accustomed to a lifestyle they had never earned. Unemployment soared. Workers were not prepared to accept wages and benefits that did not resemble those in the heady pre-austerity era. Rebuilding a spendthrift economy into a fiscally prudent economy still able to fulfill its borrowing obligations is not easily done. The dreams of millions were shattered.

Unless Ontario undergoes some severe fiscal restructuring, it is on the road to becoming another version of the Greek financial meltdown. A reduction in civil service numbers will not kill the provincial economy. Government mismanagement, waste and inefficiencies are doing that now. Eventually, as happened in Greece, lenders will dictate the terms of government spending if Ontario fails to put its fiscal house in order. The clock is ticking.

Joe--if the patient that this doctor saw in Florida was suspected of having MERS why was this doctor allowed to fly to Canada before he was also tested??  Too bad there is not a vaccine for incompetence.  I thought it was the job of health departments to protect people from disease rather than allow it to be spread.  Or is this what they want??
