Re:  Mulcair says the wealthy can't empathize with the poor. He should read some history, Robert Fulford | 4/12/14

Robert Fulford notes that the welfare state began under Otto von Bismarck, but it is commonly understood that the German Chancellor was in cahoots with industrialists whose primary motivation was to keep socialism away from the factory floor. Worried by the growth of the socialist movement, Bismarck first instituted the Anti-Socialist Laws in 1878 which forbade socialist meetings and newspapers, and which led to the arrest of socialist leaders and the abolition of trade unions. But repression could not turn back the tide, and minimal concessions to the working class eventually became necessary.
In view of these circumstances, it is ironic that Fulford dotes on Bismarck's empathetic qualities, while at the same time asserting that NDP Leader Thomas Mulcair has a simplistic understanding of character.

Otto von Bismarck - Social Legislation

Bismarck's idea was to implement welfare programs that were acceptable to conservatives without any socialistic aspects. He was dubious about laws protecting workers at the workplace, such as safe working conditions, limitation of work hours, and the regulation of women's and child labor. He believed that such regulation would force workers and employers to reduce work and production, and thus harm the economy.......... Bismarck's program centered squarely on insurance programs designed to increase productivity, and focus the political attentions of German workers on supporting the Junkers' government.

Subject: "Unparliamentary" language in Australian Parliament adds to colour

The Editor
The Ottawa Citizen

"Unparliamentary" language in Australian Parliament adds to colour
Re "Shame! House rules aimed at wrong targets," by Kate Heartfield (April 12).

In this context, we may take a look at Parliament of a sister democracy -- Australia., where parliamentary debates are known to be wild and colourful.

In his book Among the Barbarins, Australian writer Paul Sheehan tells us an exchange in Parliament between an opposition MP named Wilson Tuckey and then Prime Minister Paul Keating:

Tuckey:  "You are an idiot. You are just a hopeless nong ..."
Keating: "Shut up! Sit down and shut up, you pig ... Why do you not shut up, you clown? This man has a criminal intellect ... this clown continues to interject in perpetuity."

The Australian equivalent of the U.S. Congessional Record, records many epithets that Mr. Keating regularly used: scumbags, sleazebags, mangy maggots, immoral cheats ...

However, noted American writer, Bill Bryson, in his book In a Sunburned Country, writes: "On the other hand, and what makes up for a lot, is that Australians have the best and most entertaining parliamentary debates anywhere. Our television news coverage would be vastly enlivened if it provided a nightly report from Australia's parliamentary chambers."

May be we can give a little latitude when our parliamentarians occasionally resort to "unparliamentary" language.

Subject: Do you appreciate the difference between a unitary and federal state? It is prime reason for unrest in the Eastern Ukraine.  DD

Joe--the prime reason for unreswt in Ukraine is the fact that the West and israel are fomenting the unrest.  Unitary government should allow the people to decide what they want to do and a Federal government will dictate what they may do.  Sadly the government in the Ukraine is controlled by the same evil that controls us.  Greed and power are the only things that matter and the opinion of the people matters not a damn.
Subject: Why you should care about the Fair Elections Act  DD

Joe--when the government uses a word like 'fair' you know it is a scam.  And the minute I saw Manning promoting it I knew ir was a scam--no one knows better than he how to manipulate an election.

Do the "Political Warriors" Want A World War Over Ukraine?

By Stephen J. Gray

"When a major power acts in a way that is so clearly aggressive, militaristic and imperialistic, this represents a significant threat to the peace and stability of the world and it's time we all recognized the depth and the seriousness of that threat."
Stephen Harper, in The Canadian Press, April 14, 2014. [1]

Oh really, P.M. Harper should tell that to the B.S. merchant in the big house of no shame that is spying on the whole world [1a] and is "militaristic and imperialistic," and has his sycophants destroying homes and killing children with drones in other countries. [1b] And has numerous wars planned. [1c]
Mr. Harper should give his head a shake and put his brain box in motion and listen to this video [2] where some of his "allies" were plotting the takeover of the elected government of Ukraine. Still, not only does Stephen Harper fail to educate himself on who started all this dangerous brinkmanship, his media mouthpieces [3] have also covered up the evidence that is available, that shows "regime change" and a "coup" was plotted by Harper's wonderful "allies."  And of course his "allies" have a history of starting illegal wars [4] and causing devastation and destruction worldwide. And Harper is the guy who talks about a "threat to the peace and stability of the world." He should tell that to his buddies in the Gang of 7 (G7) who have been up to their dirty necks in regime change around the world for years. Oh, I forgot, they call this "bringing democracy" and a "responsibility to protect." Their last big victory along with NATO was Libya where they helped out Al-Qaeda, [5] a supposed enemy. But hey, these are our "great leaders" [6] who watch all the action in the safety of their bunkers. [6a] After all, you can't expect the "international community" [6b] to be where the fighting is. Can you?
Anyway, I have a suggestion for Mr. Harper and his "pit bull" buddy Mr. Baird. If they really want some action get some combat gear on, head to Ukraine and lead the charge for war from the front lines along with your Gang of 7 (G7) and corporate, banking and media buddies. Let's see you all really perform instead of shooting off your mouths while others have to do your and your allies dirty work. Let the "war business" and "war games for World Leaders" begin. [7]

Subject: Canada: Could be Peacemaker in the Ukraine

Dear Editor,

Canada's contribution to Ukraine's problems could be offering an example of how two language groups have succeeded in inhabiting the same country.

A Federal system of governance provides that those matters serving  collective interests be undertaken by the national government , those that divide be within the domain of provincial governments,  with institutions existing  enabling those moving from province to province to maintain their language.

The Kiev Post in 2002 wrote of "delegating powers to the local and regional levels, introduce true self government, and a real division of powers between the branches of power.
Ukraine should consider federalism" (1)

Pro-federalization activists have taken over government buildings across the 80% Russian speaking Eastern Ukraine. They are calling for referendums. In this they are supported by the general population  An article ending, "TheComment: As is evident from the above, these are not as the Western media claims small isolated protests. " is supported by videos on it. (2)

Videos in this and other articles (3) invalidate Prime Minister Harper's  accusation that these actions are ""Russian provocateurs sent by the Putin regime."  (4)  Russia has, however, been arguing a Ukraine with Federal governance such as Canada's would serve Ukrainians of both language groups best.. (5)

Canada could serve Ukraine and the world by presenting our example and pressing for it.

Unfortunately such is not the case.

Eastern Ukrainian Federalists are accepted by Harper as terrorists inspired by Russia. Ukrainian government suppression of them is supported. He considers their actions copying what was was done in Kiev, barricades and seizing buildings,  by those who overthrew the elected President a day after an agreement was made for the future, as being started by Russia.

Because he sees Eastern Ukrainians as Russian aroused rather than acting in their own interests he said ""When a major power acts in a way that is so clearly aggressive, militaristic and imperialistic this represents a significant threat to the peace and stability of the world and it's time we allrecognized the depth and the seriousness of that threat." (6)

Canada could be a Peacemaker . Unfortunately Harper is acting as a Powder Monkey,  fueling what may well lead to  more than cannons going off.
