Subject: For an efficient mass transit system, Ottawa should look to

The Editor
Ottawa Citizen
For an efficient mass transit system, Ottawa should look at
Shanghai
Re "Light rails real effects," by Sarah Thuswaldner (Nov.
25).
Ottawa's decision to develop a light rail can have positive effects on
reducing traffic congestion and air pollution. In this context, a look at
Shanghai's mass transit system may provide some insight.
In 2011, I spent a month visiting Shanghai, Beijing and other cities of
China. It was an opportunity to see the world's most populous country on
the march while the U.S., EU and most other countries were mired in a
recession. With its Maglev (magnetically-levitated) trains running at a
breakneck speed of 430 kilometres per hour, Shanghai looks like a city of
the future.
Maglev connects Shanghai International Airport with the Pudong Central
Business District, 30 kilometres away, in seven minutes. Compared to
this, it takes more than an hour to reach Ottawa International Airport
from the downtown, half the distance, during the rush hour.
Shanghai has grown like no other city in the world.  Home to 10
million souls in 1990 (compared to New York City's 8 million), Shanghai
is now a megapolis with 23 million people. To accommodate this huge
influx, the city fathers have created seven satellite towns around the
city, connected with the world's largest subway system. The Shanghai
subway system is fast and affordable -- about 6 yuan or $1 for average
trip -- transporting millions of passengers every day. Buses provide the
feeder service for shorter distances away from the subway stations.
During my stay, I used only once a taxi, although the average taxi fare
is only 20 yuan or little more than $3.
With less than a million population, Ottawa doesn't have the population
density of Shanghai to have a subway system. However, a light rail
system, with buses providing feeder services, can be useful to reduce
both traffic congestion and pollution. The proposed light rail system,
running from Orleans to Kanata through the downtown and a diversion to
the airport can go a long way to provide much needed the mass transit for
Ottawa. If Orleans and Kanata residents are provided affordable daily
parkings at the stations, many will be tempted to park their cars at the
stations and take the train to commute to the downtown. This will improve
quality of air and reduce traffic gridlock during rush hours and also
make Ottawa much more attractive for shoppers. Contrary to what, Sarah
Thuswaldner says, a light rail is the need of the hour.

Free trade promised more trade, productivity growth, and higher incomes
but those outcomes are not remotely supported by the aggregate economic
data.
U.S.-bound merchandise exports now equal under 20% of Canadian GDP,
exactly where they were when the FTA was negotiated in the mid-1980s.
Furthermore, we are exporting substantially more unprocessed or barely
processed resources.
During the postwar golden age, Canada steadily closed the productivity
gap, rising from 70% of U.S. levels to over 90% by the mid-1980s. But
almost as soon as the FTA was being negotiated, Canadian relative
productivity began slipping, and today Canadian productivity in the
business sector is back down to just 70% of U.S. levels.
Stagnating productivity has also led to stagnating real incomes - real
wages are no higher than in the 1970s, and neither are family
incomes.
In exalting free trade, why does Licia Corbella ignore not only credible
critics such as Unifor's Jim Stanford, but also the credible economic
data which is at odds with her conclusions?

FTA's Assumed Benefits Can't Be Found

Subject: The Silence of the Lambs
The silence of the
CPC political lambs Ted Falk and Geoffrey Pollock

History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of
social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the
appalling silence of the good people. In the End, we will remember not
the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends. The ultimate
tragedy is not the oppression and cruelty by the bad people but the
silence over that by the good people. -- Martin Luther King, Jr.

Silence is defined as a state of abstaining from speech or the avoidance
of mentioning or discussing something. Political parties are infamous for
using the strategy of silence to avoid addressing divisive and
controversial issues that could threaten to diminish their political
power.  While the tactics of political silence is expected behavior
by oppressive and centrally controlled governments where power is wielded
by one person or a party elite, it seems problematic and inappropriate in
a free political system such our own constitutional democracy where
freedom of expression is a valued and protected inalienable right.

The current government has demonstrated that it has no qualms with
liberally using silence to avoid officially responding to important
political matters such as abortion, Senate expenses and gun
control.  As a result, their core supporters are becoming more and
more disaffected as they perceive the government to be turbid,
clandestine and unresponsive.
It is plain to see that this government expects all its MP's to expound
only the carefully crafted and authorized party line and remain silent on
all other issues not officially endorsed by the PMO elite. Dissenters are
swiftly punished to maintain discipline among the ranks.

This conspiracy of silence has persisted for so long now that the
following effects have become systemic in its internal workings.

Bandwagon effect: refers to people doing certain things because other
people are doing them, regardless of their own beliefs, which they may
ignore or override.
Bystander effect: is a social psychology phenomenon that refers to cases
in which individuals do not offer any means of help to a dissenter when
other people are present.
Blind loyalty effect: where a person follows lockstep and unquestioningly
behind an organizational in which they are a member. Often, the marching
is done unconsciously because one doesn't want to upset or anger another
members - a practice of "keep the peace mentality." Sometimes,
the blindly loyal member will "go along" with something even
when common sense and rationale plead with them to speak out.

The NFA has reached out to two aspiring CPC candidates Ted Falk of the
Provencher riding in Manitoba and Geoffrey Pollock of the Toronto-Centre
riding in Ontario for their personal views on gun control reform.
This was done in an effort to reveal where they stand on this issue to
firearm owners and other civil libertarians in their ridings so they
could vote accordingly.

Be it known that despite the many repeated requests for this information
from these two, they chose not to respond and remain silent on this
matter to this day. The NFA has consequently and with deep disappointment
graded these two aspiring CPC candidates vying for election in the
November
25 by-election with
an F. Freedom loving firearms owners who reside in their ridings are
encouraged to withhold their votes from these two candidates to send a
resounding message to the CPC that only open gun control reformist will
be supported.
Silence on this unresolved matter will no longer be tolerated.
