Subject: Adding up the ways we're falling behind in education
Joe--this article is just another example of the country's inability to 'educate' it's students. The aim of 'education' today is to program students into believing all the garbage they are taught rather than to think and question dictates that are pushed down their throat. One thing governments do NOT want are citizens that can think for themselves. The article itself is mumbo-jumbo and that is what we are all supposed to fall for. Only one set of information is taught and none dare question it.
Then we read that Canada is importing people from China because our students don't know how to work in a mine???
People are not all the same and do not learn at the same rate or have abilities in every area. Until the 'education' system starts treating people as individuals instead of cookie-cutter people nothing will change.
University and college education are so far beyond the cost that many people can afford. Gadhaffi made sure all Libyans got as much education as they wanted and look what we did to that country. Perhaps Canada wants only miners and not thinkers??
Except, perhaps, for the offspring of the Corporate 1%'s, their successors ?

Subject: I'm Italian, I pay little taxes

The Ottawa Citizen
Copy to: Ms Pialuisa Bianco, editor-in-chief of Longitude: The Italian Journal of Foreign Affairs, Rome : With reference to your Op-Ed: "Byond Berlusconi," (Sept. 30) published in The New York Times. As tax-dodging former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is finally out of power, it is time to put Alessandro Profumo's wealth tax proposal into practice.
Mr. Mark Milke, author of Tax Me, I'm Canadian!: With reference to your Op-Ed: "How the U.S. created Canada's high-tax state," in The Ottawa Citizen. on Oct. 11.
Mr. Uri Friedman, managing editor Foreign Policy: With reference to your article "Why Italy needs to reboot," published in The Toronto Star on Nov. 13, 2011.
I'm Italian, I pay little taxes!
In his October 11 article: "How the U.S. created Canada's high-tax state," author of Tax Me, I'm Canadian!, Mike Milke, rails against the U.S. for providing a "high-tax," model for Canada. In this context, it may be interesting to look at Italy where serially tax-dodging Italians pay little taxes.
Like Greece and Spain, Italy is facing a debt crisis of epic proportions. Italy's debt crisis largely stems from serial tax-dodging by Italians across-the-board. The Associate Press observed in November, 2011 that "easy-going Italians ... rarely think twice about paying under the table for home improvements, dental work, or even a cappuccino."
The numbers back this claim. In 2007, the Austrian economist Friedrich Schneider estimated that Italy's shadow economy accounted for more than 22 per cent of GDP. The only country with a larger underground economy is Greece, which is facing a far bigger debt crisis.
Hand in hand with the shadow economy comes tax evasion on a massive scale. As Uri Friedman, managing editor of Foreign Policy pointed out in his artcle in the Toronto Star : "Why Italy needs to reboot" (Nov. 13, 2011): "The wealthy often send their money to tax havens in Switzerland and Luxembourg and Italians planning their weddings often dodge consumption taxes by paying for catering, photographers, and flowers in cash. Italy's Economy Ministry noted in 2009 that half of Italy's taxpayers weren't declaring much more than $20,000 in income, and tax returns were showing lawyers earning on the average a little more than $60,000. Last year, according to the BBC, tax evasion cost the government $142 billion."
To address the serial tax-dodging by Italians, an Italian business executive has come up with an interesting idea -- a wealth tax. An Italian wealth tax would be a game-changer. A one-time tax to raise Euro 400 billion, as proposed by the former CEO of UniCredit, Alessandro Profumo, would solve Italy's debt problem, thus helping reverse the broader euro crisis. Italians are so wealthy, they could afford it. They have certainly no business asking for help from the Germans, who are actually poorer.
Italian business elites, including the head of Confinustria, the business lobby, have reacted surprisingly well to Mr. Profumo's idea. Part of the reason is that Italians are effectively suffering a wealth tax as a result of plunging domestic stock and bond markets. So getting the agony over with has some appeal to Italy's wealthy. The Euro 400 billion that Mr. Profumo proposes would cut national debt from 120 per cent of GDP to below 100 per cent. That would change market psychology. Equity and bond prices might rebound -- meaning that investors could gain more on the market swings than they lost on the tax roundabout.
What's more, Italians are rich enough to bail out their own government. The Bank of Italy data show that net wealth was Euro 8.6 trillion, or 566 per cent of GDP, in 2009 -- more than Germany's Euro 6.1 trillion, or 246 per cent of GDP, in 2008. Even if a wealth tax focused only on the richest people, a tax of 10 per cent, collected over a few years, should do the trick.
Mr. Profumo hasn't just pushed the tax idea. He has offered to enter politics to implement it as part of a coalition government. Now that Italy's tax-dodging Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has been forced to leave the political scene and facing charges of tax evasion, time has arrived to offer Alessandro Profumo a key position in the coalition government. In a thought-provoking Op-Ed: "Beyond Berlusconi," published in the New York Times on Sept. 30, Pialuisa Bianco, editor-in-chief of Longitude: Italian Monthly on World Affairs, wrote: "Italians are waiting for a new leader capable of telling the truth and not pandering to their fears. But to be legitimate, that leader must convince them on the need to break the deadlock with substantial reforms." They may have found such a leader in Alessandro Profumo.

I dont know what you know about train dispatching. Especially back in the day when there was not many if any single track situations.
Well we had many many lives in our hands on every shift. Passenger trains, freight trains with over a hundred cars of grain or lumber, heading towards each other. TRains full of passengers, absolutely not going inj the same direction, no head on towards each other. The train dispatcher took care ofm the meets, the waits, the pass each other etc. As well as protecting, work trains (working to repair track) Section crews patrolling tyrack etc. As a dispatcher I had more lives in my hands every day that I went to work than just about any other profession. Dont utter the words, " what about a doctor." I had more lives in my hands than a doctor every day that I worked. I never had one accident in my railroading career. I never had one demerit mark on my files when I retired. That's why I cannot get too excited when I hear about a bunch of politicians sitting around debating any subject for hours and
hours to come to a decision, which is usually followed by an adjournment.
So when I seem to be belligerent it is because I am. I was used to have to make immediate decisions, to save time and lives.
And Joe, I still do not believe that The Jews have suffered more than any other people on earth ,even going back to The Roman Empire, yes they were even pampered there. And I am not afraid of them now, as beligerent and mighty as they may be.

These three are connected. I don't need to explain how:
1. I hope that people, including Law students, will challenge the idea that the Government, in over-riding a Charter Right, has to meet strict standards that protect the Charter Rights.
There is little protection because the process is flawed. It's not too hard to see.
(Explanation - it's short!) <http://sandrafinley.ca/?p=10614>The Oakes Test to over-ride Charter Rights. <http://sandrafinley.ca/?p=10614>How Prosecutors get around it. The obvious remedy is presented, too. Based on experience from my trial.
2. Here is a warning for Canadians, if ever there was one. See <http://sandrafinley.ca/?p=10635>ERNST VS ENCANA. Jessica Ernst's water supply was destroyed by "fracking".
How has the Government set it up and how must (?) the courts respond?
(Alberta ERCB = Energy Resources Conservation Board)
the court found that the Alberta government had granted complete immunity to the ERCB for all legal claims, including for breaches of constitutional rights.
Maybe the better question: how do citizens respond? Where is the tipping point? . . . check out
