Tabula rasa (Latin: scraped tablet or clean slate)

Some time around the end of World War II my parents invested in a set of books entitled Groliers Encyclopaedia "The Books of Knowledge" .

Not knowing any different I read them and developed somewhat of an eidetic memory .
that put all sorts of stuff in my mind - not subject to recall on demand, mind, but that pops in at times.

When considering the relationship of Stéphane Dion to the Canadian electorate the term Tabula rasa (Latin: scraped tablet or clean slate)
jumped in - a blank slate in the mind of the electorate at large.

It will be most interesting to track that which comes to fill the slate.

Subject: Fw: Allies had to outbomb the Germans to win

With reference to our telephonic conversation, I like to inform that I sent the letter to the Ottawa Citizen supporting the view of Mr. Moe Romanow about the controversial plaque at the Canadian War Museum criticizing the Strategic Bombing Command for bombing of the German cities during the World War II. The text of the controversial plaque reads:
"The value and morality of the strategic bombing offensive against Germany remains bitterly contested. Bomber Command's aim was to crush civilian morale and force Germany to surrender by destroying its cities and  industrial installations. Although Bomber Command and American attacks left 600,000 Germans dead and more than five millionhomeless, the raids resulted in only small reductions in German war production until late in the war."
This is absolutely false. It was due to strategic boming, Germany ran out of military aircraft production which allowed the Allied invasion of Europe. Moreover, if the Allied didn't bomb, Germany would have bombed Britain to surrender. As William L. Shirerer wrote in his Berlin Diary: "The main effect of a week of constant British night bombings has been to spread great disullusionemnt among the people here and sow doubt in their minds. One of them said to me today: 'I'll never believe another thing they [Nazis] say. If they've lied about the raids in the rest of Germany as they have about the ones in Berlin, then it must have been pretty bad out there.'  ... Main effect is a moral one, and if the British are smart they'll keep them up every night."
The plaque is a disgrace and must be removed.

Re "War museum know-nothings demean our veterans," by Moe Romanoew (Letter, Dec. 1).
William L. Shirer, renownded Berlin correspondent for CBS Radio before the American entry to the Second World War, had left an eyewitness report of what Hitler wanted to do in his Berlin Diary:
"Berlin, September 4, 1940:
"Hitler made a surprise speech here this afternoon, the occasion being the opening of the Winterhilfe -- winter relief -- campaign. The session was another beautiful example of how Hitler takes advantage of the gullibility of his people. He told them, for instance, that while the German air force attacked Britain by day, the cowardly RAF comes over only at night. He did not explain why this is so -- that Germans can get over England by day because it is only twenty-five miles from German bases and they can thus protect their bombers with fighters, whereas Germany is too far from Britain to enable the British to protect their bombers with fighters.
"Hitler said with lovely hypocrisy: 'I waited three months without answering the British night bombings in the hope they would stop this mischief. But Herr Churchill saw in this a sign of weakness. You will understand that we are now answering, night for night. And when the British air force drops two or three or four thousand kilograms of bombs, then we will in one night drop 150-230-300- or 400,000 kilograms.'
" 'When they declare,' continued Hitler, 'that they will increase their attacks on our cities, then we will raze their cities to the ground. We will stop the handiworks of these air pirates, so help us God.'
" 'The hour will come,' Hitler went on, 'when one of us will break, and it will not be National Socialist Germany.' "
Thanks to the massive Allied strategic bombing of German cities, it was Nazi Germany which ultimately broke. The War Museum should take a second look at history.

Subject: Prediction: Dion and his team will  defeat Harper.

Perhaps you had little time to watch the Liberal leadership debate or listen to the candidates' speeches.I had an opportunity to do so, and could not help noting the numerous times that, not only the candidates, but also all the other past Liberal PMs who spoke, mention the word ''progressive.'' Indeed  there is no doubt that the Liberals intend to take over the middle-of-the-road stance of the former federal Progressive Conservative governments as they go into the next federal election; and rightly so.It will be very easy to portray Harper and his neo-conservatives as Reform-Alliancers in the sheep's clothing as REGRESSIVE CONSERVATIVES.

I am happy with the choice that the Liberals made: Stephan Dion. I believe and sincerely hope that, along with experienced campaigners like Bob Rae and Ignatieff, they will be able to regain the TRUST of all Canadians, and topple the Harper minority government.  Several of  Harper's cabinet ministers are Mike Harris' type people who dismantled  many social services in Ontario during 1995-2003. We cannot allow Flaherty (?), Baird, Clement, to wreck the Canadian social and economic underpinnings as they did in Ontario. We need to get them out of government as quickly as possible BEFORE they completely dismantle everything that was done during the past 13 years. If we don't, Preston Manning will be wearing a permanent smile of victory on his face.

Allez-y  Dion; "Tous ensemble" you can easily topple Harper!!

It took all of about ten seconds after the ballots were counted for both
the Conservatives and the NDP to proclaim their overwhelming joy, to any
reporter they could find, at the selection of Stephan Dion as Liberal

Dion provides much fodder for his critics.  The numerous examples given
by the NDP and Conservative largely have one thing in common: his
tendency to say one thing (or even claim to be staunchly in favour of,)
then do the opposite.  It is a characteristic of Liberals generally, and
Dion is a chronic sufferer of it.

My prediction is that Dion will form back-to-back majority governments.

Just to be clear, I'm not saying that his critics are wrong, or that
there is anything about Dion that I like (let alone admire.)  However,
if there is one thing that Chretien taught us, it's that personal
failings are not an impediment to becoming Prime Minister.  In fact,
when I look at Dion, I see Chretien's twin, in a dozen different ways.
Despite lacking charisma, not communicating well (he didn't even speak
either official language that well,) and also being a chronic sufferer
of the aforementioned Liberal affliction, Chretien formed three majority

P.S. Jim and Tracy: Given how eager both the Conservatives and the NDP
are to to battle with Dion, I hope you're busy making plans for an early
spring election.

Subject: True origin of the Internet

Betcha didn't know this!

In ancient Israel, it came to pass that a trader by the name of Abraham Com did take unto himself a young wife by the name of Dot.

And Dot Com was a comely woman, broad of shoulder and long of leg.  Indeed, she had been called 'Amazon Dot Com.'

And she said unto Abraham, her husband, "Why doth thou travel far from town to town with thy goods, when thou can trade without ever leaving thy tent?"

And Abraham did look at her as though she were several saddle bags short of a camel load, but simply said, "How, dear?"  And Dot replied, "I will place drums in all the towns and drums in between to send messages saying what you have for sale and they will reply telling you which hath the best price.  And the sale can be made on the drums and delivery made by Uriah's Pony Stable (UPS)."

Abraham thought long and decided he would let Dot have her way with the drums.  And the drums rang out and were an immediate success.  Abraham sold all the goods he had at the top price, without ever moving from his tent.

But this success did arouse envy.  A man named Maccabia did secret himself inside Abraham's drum and was accused of insider trading.  And the young men did take to Dot Com's trading as doth the greedy horsefly take to camel dung.  They were called Nomadic Ecclesiastical Rich Dominican Siderites, or NERDS for short.

And lo, the land was so feverish with joy at the new riches and the deafening sound of drums that no one noticed that the real riches were going to the drum maker, one Brother William of Gates, who bought up every drum company in the land.  And indeed did insist on making drums that would work only with Brother Gates' drumheads and drumsticks.

And Dot did say, "Oh, Abraham, what we have started is being taken over by others."

And as Abraham looked out over the Bay of Ezekiel ,(or as it came to be known - "eBay")  he said, "We need a name that reflects what we are."

And Dot replied, "Young Ambitious Hebrew Owner Operators."

"YAHOO," said Abraham.

And that is how it all began.  It wasn't Al Gore after all !!!
